Understanding Autism
What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. The term "spectrum" reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths each person with autism possesses. ASD affects approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States according to the CDC.
Early Signs to Watch For
- •Limited or no eye contact by 6 months
- •No babbling or gesturing by 12 months
- •No single words by 16 months
- •Loss of previously acquired speech or social skills
- •Repetitive behaviors or movements
- •Strong reactions to sensory input (lights, sounds, textures)
- •Difficulty with changes in routine
