The usual starting point
A common guideline is about 10% of your child's body weight, and many occupational therapists suggest starting lighter. For example, a 50 lb child would usually start around 5 lb. Go lighter if your child is unsure.
Safety rules that matter most
Weighted blankets are not for babies or toddlers. Most guidance says not to use one with children under 3, and many recommend waiting longer.
Your child must be able to push the blanket off and get out from under it easily on their own.
Never cover the head or face.
Ask your pediatrician first if your child has breathing, heart, circulation, or seizure conditions, or has very low muscle tone.
Size
Pick a blanket that covers your child's body, not the whole bed. Weight hanging over the side tugs the blanket off and makes it feel heavier.
Introduce it slowly
Start with short sessions during calm times, like reading on the couch, before trying it at bedtime. Let your child decide. Some children love it right away, and some never take to it, and both are normal.
Talk to your child's OT
An occupational therapist who knows your child can give the best recommendation on weight and how to use it.
